Gillespie out of World Cup
Australia's unluckiest fast bowler Jason Gillespie has been ruled out of the World Cup with another debilitating injury to a body that continues to let him down.
Gillespie's constant battle against frailty has ruled him out of 125 of Australia's 175 international one-day matches since his debut in October, 1996.
His latest problem, a torn tendon next to the Achilles in his right foot, was cruelly suffered with the last ball he delivered at a training session before Australia's cup game against Namibia last week.
"We had a top up training session and I thought I would go and have a bowl, make sure the ball was coming out well," said a dispirited Gillespie.
"I wanted to practise a few new things, like slower balls and all that sort of stuff.
"It was the last ball I bowled and, as it turned out, it's the last ball I bowled here.
"I've been wondering what if I opted not to have a bowl that day, maybe I'd be okay.
"But you can't worry about these sorts of things, you've got to train and prepare yourself as best as you possibly can."
Gillespie was due to fly home to Australia tonight with either NSW left-armer Nathan Bracken or Western Australian Brad Williams to be called into the squad.
Gillespie said his body felt fine before last week's fateful practice run in Potchefstroom.
