Vics ruin Redbacks' Xmas with 29 run win
Expertly marshalled by Cameron White, Victoria consigned South Australia to a most unmerry festive season by rolling to a 29-run victory in their limited-overs cup match at Adelaide Oval.
Defending 7-251, the winners restricted the Redbacks to 6-222 to reach equal top of the cup table with Queensland on 22 points, at the same time leaving SA at the foot of both limited-overs and first-class competitions.
It was a result that only heightened the doubts swirling around the tenures of Redbacks captain Darren Lehmann and coach Wayne Phillips.
SA lost batsman Cameron Borgas to a dislocated shoulder when he dived to stop a ball at wide mid on during the 12th over of the Victorian innings, meaning he will be out of action for at least two weeks, missing the start of next month's Twenty20 competition.
White bowled with accuracy and decent change of pace for his 2-37, while also rotating the other bowlers with intelligence.
"This gives us a bit of momentum going into the period after Christmas, we'll have a bit of a smash and a bash in the Twenty20 and see how we go there," White said.
Lehmann (77 not out), Mark Cosgrove (41) and Daniel Harris (47) all made handy scores without going on to the significant innings required to cancel out Brad Hodge's 88.
Man of the match Jon Moss also had a significant allround game with 60 and 1-35.
Having made centuries in SA's previous two victories this season, former Bushranger Matthew Elliott made only 10 before nicking a good one from Mick Lewis, and a promising partnership of 57 between Cosgrove and Harris was terminated when Cosgrove was pinned in front by a well pitched off break from David Hussey (1-1), whose wicket-taking over was his only one for the night.
Callum Ferguson then swung a lazy catch to midwicket to put his place under question, and Harris' sturdy 47 was unceremoniously ended when he cut unwisely at White.
Graham Manou added 44 with Lehmann as the required runrate climbed towards double digits, and his bizarre run out after White's lbw appeal was quickly followed by Ryan Harris' demise to an accurate top spinner.
Their dismissals left Lehmann in the unenviable situation of merely trying to deny Victoria the bonus point, which he did with the help of Jason Gillespie (17 not out).
"It was shattering for us, we really got ourselves up for this one, and then to bat poorly like we did is really disappointing," Harris said.
The visitors had earlier been stunted in their early batting progress by Gillespie, who gave nothing to hit in conceding 20 runs from 10 overs.
At the other end Gary Putland (2-60) went for 14 from an overpitched first over, but gained a valuable wicket in his second when Michael Klinger touched a ball angled across him, and Daniel Cullen's (2-53) entry to the attack kept the innings under control.
Hussey helped Hodge add runs at greater speed, and their stand of 71 occupied only 76 balls until Hodge flicked loosely at Putland to be caught at midwicket when in sight of a century.
