WA trainer banned for five years
West Australian trainer Gordon "Scobie" O'Donnell has been disqualified for five years after being found guilty of having in his possession electrical devices capable of affecting a horse's performance.
Western Australian Turf Club stewards have concluded an inquiry which began with an inspection of O'Donnell's stables on August 1.
On September 5, O'Donnell was charged with having in his possession an electrical handpiece, electrical saddle blanket and an electric cattle prod, all of which were capable of affecting the performance of a horse in a race or training gallop.
O'Donnell pleaded not guilty to the charges.
"After due consideration, the stewards on Thursday found Mr O'Donnell guilty on all charges," chief steward John Zucal said in a statement.
In relation to penalty the stewards took into consideration seven points including the serious nature of the charges, the damage done to the integrity, image and welfare of racing and that the penalties should reflect a deterrent factor.
O'Donnell was disqualified for five years for possession of the handpiece, five years for possession of the electric saddle blanket and two years for possession of the cattle prod.
All penalties are to be served concurrently and are effective immediately.
