Monaghan's mum wants justice
Michael Monaghan's mother has urged the National Rugby League judiciary to administer strong punishment after her son had his jaw smashed in two places.
Wests Tigers second rower Luke O'Donnell will front the judiciary on Wednesday night to contest a striking charge that carries a maximum 12-match suspension.
And if Mary Monaghan has her way, that's about how long O'Donnell will find himself in the stands if found guilty of a deliberate elbow or forearm to her son's head at Leichhardt Oval last Saturday night.
"I hope the boy is out at least as long as my boy is out. I think that's the only way they learn," Mrs Monaghan told Channel 10.
Michael Monaghan underwent two hours of surgery at Hills Private Hospital in western Sydney to have a plate inserted in his chin region and the right side of his face wired.
The Canberra halfback will have another operation next week to remove the wire and have a second plate inserted.
He will be out for at least 10 weeks.
It is believed the Tigers were going to supply video evidence of Monaghan resuming his place in the Canberra defensive line for a brief period after the incident in order raise doubts about when the injury occurred.
The Tigers were expected to argue Monaghan might even have aggravated - or suffered - the injury after the O'Donnell tackle.
But, on request, the Raiders provided judiciary commissioner Jim Hall with a medical statement that could nail O'Donnell to a lengthy layoff.
