Waterhouse fined over cocaine swab
Gai Waterhouse has been fined $15,000 over the Love You Honey cocaine affair despite Racing NSW stewards finding the filly's positive swab was most likely the result of contamination by a stablehand.
Waterhouse said she was being asked to pay for someone else's mistake and reiterated her belief that cocaine use was in epidemic proportions and perhaps mandatory drug testing should be imposed.
Waterhouse said she had no choice but to plead guilty under the rules of racing which state that a trainer bears ultimate liability if a horse is presented to race with a prohibited substance in its system.
"From a licensed person's point of view it is impossible to control what people do out of the workplace," Waterhouse said.
"It is unfair that we should pay for the folly of others.
"Stewards are of the view that Rule 178 is one of total liability on the trainer so I have no choice but to plead guilty.
"This inquiry has been a complete eye-opener.
"I didn't know anything about cocaine before and I don't know how we handle this epidemic.
"How do we know they are using it.
"Should we be drug testing them."
