Katsidis extends unbeaten boxing streak

World-ranked lightweight Michael "Rocky" Katsidis has extended his unbeaten streak to 19 professional fights after an opening round TKO of Colombian journeyman Guillermo Mosquera in Toowoomba.

Former rugby league international Robbie O'Davis was ringside to watch Katsidis, flanked by his brother and leading jockey Stathi, systematically destroy Mosquera and retain his WBO Asia Pacific lightweight belt in the process.

His attention now shifts to South African Oneboy Makhwelo with the pair to square-off at the Gold Coast's Royal Pines Resort on March 3.

It's a quick turn-around but Katsidis, 25, knows he needs to become more fight fit with speculation rising that he will have a world title shot in the United States later this year.

American hitman Zahir Raheem put Katsidis on notice last month when he suggested the pair would slug it out for the WBO's vacant lightweight title, possibly in May.

Katsidis put the disappointment of being rejected for a visa into the US due to a prior conviction for assault aside for the fight that ended all too soon for the 2,000-strong home crowd.

He knocked Mosquera to the canvas three times in the opening round before the referee stopped the fight.

"I wanted to show him that all the experience he has could not match my power," Katsidis said.

"He has to stay on his feet to beat me."

The ultra-fit Mosquera - 16 years older than his rival and a veteran of three world title attempts - lived up to his showman reputation by entering the ring with the aid of a walking stick but was completely outclassed.

This was Katsidis' 17th career knock-out win and is likely to be his last in his hometown with an assault on the world stage ready to be launched.
