Haumono, Hopoate win on undercard
Solomon Haumono continued his knockout rampage on Monday night while fellow former rugby league star and heavyweight boxer John Hopoate avenged his first loss.
Haumono increased his pristine professional record to 13-0 with 13 KOs with a stunning one punch, right hand, second round knockout of Auckland-based Samoan Seiaute Malata on the Anthony Mundine world title undercard at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.
It meant he had boxed fewer than eight full rounds in five fights since resuming his pugilistic career back in March after a hiatus of almost five years.
Hopoate improved his record to 8-2 with 8 KOs, with a fifth round stoppage of fellow Sydneysider Brian Fitzgerald, who outpointed `Hoppa' in their first fight back in March.
Referee Garry Dean stopped the fight after 55 seconds of the fifth round when Fitzgerald was rocked by some powerful punches.
Also on the undercard, Turkey's former junior amateur world champion Ercument Aslan made a successful return to the ring after almost 32 months.
Sydney based super middleweight Aslan outpointed journeyman Paz Viejo over six rounds.
