I deserve my Test shot, says Hodge
An ultra-determined Brad Hodge, expected to make his Test debut against the West Indies in Hobart this week, believes nobody is more deserving of playing cricket for Australia.
The classy right-hander is brimming with confidence after a sparkling 177 for Victoria against the tourists last Friday, ideal timing before the second Test starting Thursday at Bellerive Oval.
Hodge, 31 next month, felt he was even capable of squeezing in a career of more than 50 Tests given the hectic international cricket schedule.
"It has been extremely hard work and ... dedication, it has been a long, hard road and I honestly believe if there is anyone that deserves to play cricket for Australia, it is me," he said.
"Having put the work in and the time, and the dedication and certainly the ambition and drive has been there for a long time, it is just a case of honing your skills.
"You can't replace years and years of experience at the first class level, you get to develop your game and know exactly what you are trying to achieve in the sport."
He is about to end the second longest apprenticeship for a baggy green, after 167 first-class games.
Only Australian opener Michael Hussey (176), who made his debut this month at the Gabba, has had to be more patient and the pair look set to fight it out for a middle order spot this summer.
Hussey is filling in for the injured Justin Langer at the top of the order and must improve on his returns of 1 and 29 at the Gabba to press for a spot once his fellow West Australian returns.
"I know how hard it is to get in the side, it has taken me a long, long time and if I get my chance I certainly am not going to be giving it up easily," said Hodge.
