Windies falter in big run chase
The West Indies made a disastrous start in their campaign to save the second Test against Australia after Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist thrashed more runs in Trinidad.
At tea on the second day, the Windies were 2-25 in their first innings in reply to Australia's total of 4-576 declared.
Windies opener Devon Smith fell for a duck in the second over of the innings when he edged Jason Gillespie (1-11) to wicketkeeper Gilchrist before Brett Lee (1-14) struck in the final over before the break.
Lee nabbed Wavell Hinds (20) thanks to a sharp catch by Matthew Hayden at first slip to leave the Windies in serious trouble.
The home team was forced to face seven overs prior to tea after Australian captain Steve Waugh declared when Gilchrist (101 not out) charged to his eighth Test century.
The West Australian had combined with Ricky Ponting (206) for a 171-run stand which ruined the Windies' faint hopes of reigning in Australia after the tourists resumed at 3-371.
