Fitness key to Makybe Diva Cup bid
Makybe Diva's relentless form may see the champion mare start in the Melbourne Cup, her owner says.
Tony Santic said he wanted to give her the chance to win her third Cup, but fitness was the key.
"If everything's right with her, I think we're all looking to run her," Mr Santic told the Herald Sun.
Vets gave the seven-year-old a good health report after she won the $3 million WS Cox Plate at the weekend.
Her earnings have come to $11.4 million.
There were calls around the country to give Makybe Diva a chance at immortality by winning a record third Melbourne Cup.
And there were growing calls across Australia to give the horse her chance.
Trainer Lee Freedman said the final decision was with Mr Santic, a wealthy tuna fisherman from Port Lincoln.
Mr Santic said competing in the Melbourne Cup, on Tuesday week, would be overwhelming.
"I mean, yesterday was an emotional day for me and everyone, but if she could win her third Melbourne Cup, I think you'd have to pick me up off the floor," he said.
