Victoria claims first innings points
Victoria has taken full advantage of a benign WACA pitch to claim first innings points on day two of the Pura Cup cricket clash with Western Australia in Perth.
After dismissing the Warriors for just 142 inside two sessions on Tuesday, Victoria managed a patient 271 in reply in ideal batting conditions to claim first innings points in its opening Pura Cup match of the season.
David Hussey (63) and Jonathan Moss (58) were the main protagonists as the Bushrangers built a 129-run first innings lead against their more fancied rivals.
Western Australia then reached 0-136 in its second knock, an overall lead of seven runs, with Mike Hussey unbeaten on 76 and Chris Rogers 57 not out.
Fourteen wickets fell on day one, including all 10 WA scalps, as the visitors capitalised on a grassy WACA wicket offering plenty of assistance to the bowlers.
But the pitch had dried out by Wednesday morning's opening session and the Victorian batsmen used it to good effect.
Warriors quick Brett Dorey was disappointed at giving up first innings points, but was still confident of forcing a result over the final two days.
"We bowled really well today and they had a bit of luck," he said.
"If these two (Hussey and Rogers) can stay out there for a fair while, there's still plenty of cricket left.
"With two days left, I think we're still a good chance."
