Draper sends out mixed career messages
A further realignment of Scott Draper's sporting career may be necessary after he and Samantha Stosur won the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open.
The Australian pair won a third-set super tiebreak 10-6 after sharing the first two sets 6-2 2-6 with opponents Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe and Liezel Huber of South Africa.
Draper had planned to suspend all tennis playing for at least the next two months to pursue his newly-begun alternative career as a professional golfer.
But his performance at the Open - and the lack of anything similar from any other Australian except Lleyton Hewitt - has left him in contention for at least a doubles spot in the Australian Davis Cup team.
"I was planning on eight weeks of golf tournaments," Draper said.
"But if I'm needed for Davis Cup, I'll be there."
Australia plays Austria in a first round tie in Sydney in March after a year out of the mainstream, world group Davis Cup competition.
With Mark Philippoussis under an injury cloud and Wayne Arthurs struggling for form, Davis Cup selectors have a shortage of possibilities.
Draper showed an ability this week to maintain his tennis skills at a reasonable level while playing golf.
The same could not necessarily be said for his golf game.
