Aussies clinch Davis Cup tie
Australia moved into the Davis Cup semi-finals as Todd Woodbridge set yet another tennis record when he and Wayne Arthurs won the doubles rubber against Sweden.
The 6-4 6-2 6-2 win over Jonas Bjorkman and Thomas Enqvist gave Australia an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the tie and Woodbridge his 21st Davis Cup doubles win, taking him ahead of John Bromwich's 59-year-old record of 20 wins.
Bromwich racked up his tally of 20 wins and one loss over seven years from 1937, while Woodbridge has taken 12 years to reach his score of 21 wins and six losses.
The record was an unexpected bonus for Woodbridge, who already had the satisfaction of beating his regular doubles partner Bjorkman and playing one of the best Davis Cup matches of his career.
Woodbridge, 32, holds 12 Grand Slam doubles - 11 of them with Mark Woodforde and one with Bjorkman - and, with Woodforde, the world record for doubles titles.
"I was unaware going into today's match that I would break that record," Woodbridge said.
"There's a couple of records broken for me this year, longest played and then most matches in doubles.
"Honestly, I never expected to be able to do that, to play this long and be that successful in doubles. It's more than I expected as a young kid.
"It was my dream to be able to play Davis Cup for Australia, but to do that good is beyond what I dreamt about."
The Australians got off to a shaky start with Arthurs' first service game, down love-40 before the big-serving lefthander produced a winning shot, three aces and an unreturnable serve to win the game.
