Hewitt, Scud in doubles contention
Australian captain John Fitzgerald refused to rule out placing the all-star cast of Lleyton Hewitt and Mark Philippoussis on Davis Cup doubles duty against depleted Great Britain this weekend.
While the tried-and-tested combination of Wayne Arthurs and Todd Woodbridge is expected to get the nod, Fitzgerald said all four members of his full-strength team remained in doubles contention.
"It's fair enough to say that," Fitzgerald said.
"I've probably got a thought in my mind as to who might play but it can change after the first day.
"It depends what happens on the first day sometimes, but we're blessed with some pretty good doubles talent with this four.
"When the day arrives, we'll pick the team that we think can win the match, or has the highest percentage chance of winning the match.
"There's several combinations that could win on Saturday."
At one point, Fitzgerald paired Hewitt and Philippoussis against Woodbridge and Arthurs on the purpose-built clay court at the Sydney International Tennis Centre.
With Australia heavily favoured to advance to a quarter-final against Brazil or Sweden, Fitzgerald is likely to extend some goodwill the way of Woodbridge and Arthurs, despite their lukewarm record together in Davis Cup.
The pair have lost two out of their three doubles rubbers together for Australia, including their last - on clay in Argentina last year.
