Picioane cops fine, ban over Jacobs
Hawthorn's Lance Picioane has been implicated in the Danny Jacobs drink-driving scandal, with both players fined after it was revealed Jacobs lied about his actions last weekend.
Jacobs and Picioane were fined $5000 each by the Hawks and Picioane suspended for this weekend's game against Geelong, and both were ordered to undertake drink-driving courses and community service.
The sanctions were imposed after Jacobs admitted he fabricated his original story that he was merely sitting in the driver's seat of a friend's car to tune the radio when he was breathalysed.
In truth Picioane had taken ill and asked Jacobs to drive his car, even though he knew Jacobs was drunk after a night that ended at 5.40am last Saturday morning.
Jacobs said he drove the car for a short distance before parking, where he was asked to undertake a blood alcohol test by police who had been following the car.
Picioane said he had not been drinking, and told the club that he had not been taking any illicit substances, with his illness related to an incident in the match against Richmond on Friday night.
The truth emerged on another day of off-field scandal in the AFL, with the Hawks also playing down news a former player was investigated over a rape in Hawaii in 1999.
Carlton also referred to the Victoria Police information it had on a former player who was allegedly dealing drugs at the club.
An angry AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou described the behaviour of some players as "reprehensible and ridiculous".
Tears welled in Jacobs' eyes as he apologised for lying about his drink-driving infraction, saying he made up the story to hide Picioane's involvement.
