Australia dominates Oceania cycling
Australia's domination of the Oceania Games cycling championships continued at a stormy Wanganui Velodrome when winds became so strong that some of the programme had to be postponed until Sunday.
Despite the storm, the world-class Australian sprinters treated spectators to a superb exhibition of power sprinting and tactics.
In an all-Australian men's sprint final, Ryan Bayley ended fellow Australian Shane Kelly's unbeaten run.
Bayley won 2-0 during a session in which times became unimportant because riders finished their rides battling into the wind.
He won the first race by three-quarters of a length and was even more comfortable with his second win.
Bayley recorded decent times of 11.631 seconds and 11.823sec.
Australia's other wins came from Anna Meares, with a dominating 500m time trial, and Rose Hubbard in the women's keirin, where she headed off Meares on the line.
Saturday night was a sprinter's night simply because the wind dictated races.
The wind almost became an issue as early as 45 minutes into the evening session when the gusts becoming so strong that a portable toilet on the western bank was blown over and the clubhouse visibly shook at Wanganui's Westpac Velodrome.
The Australians were given the option of continuing or asking for the meeting to be postponed, but opted to continue after a team meeting.
