Boomers sweep NZ series
Australia's men's basketball team completed an Oceania championship whitewash and boosted its Olympic hopes with another high-octane, high-quality win over New Zealand.
The Boomers won 84-75 at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre to seal a 3-0 series win over the Tall Blacks following convincing victories in the first two matches of the series in Bendigo and Geelong this week.
The victory means Australia will be seeded higher at next year's Olympic Games than New Zealand, who finished fourth at last year's world championships.
And it avenged Australian basketball's darkest hour two years ago, when the Boomers were beaten by the Tall Blacks in the Oceania championship to miss out on a spot at the 2002 world titles.
The Boomers rode an outstanding performance from Matt Nielsen, who scored a game-high 25 points - 14 of them scored consecutively from midway through the first quarter until he was benched midway through the second.
But it was the new-look Boomers' ability to lift a notch every time the Tall Blacks challenged them which was the key to victory in the series.
Australia led 41-36 after a see-sawing first half thanks to a buzzer-beating three from centre Chris Anstey and took a nine-point lead into three-quarter time.
The Tall Blacks came out firing in the final quarter and closed to within three points, before two more buckets from Nielsen restored the Boomers' advantage and allowed them to close out the series.
It was a massive confidence boost for the Boomers, who have made wholesale changes to their squad under new coach Brian Goorjian since the 2001 Oceania debacle.
Anstey, who has been skipper in this series, said the rebuilding Boomers could improve further and had eyes on going at least one spot better than the past two Olympic Games.
