It's double gold as Bayley, Mactier fire
Dual Olympic champion Ryan Bayley and Athens silver medallist Katie Mactier delivered Australia a golden opening night at the cycling World Cup season opener at Sydney's Dunc Gray Velodrome.
Bayley continued his ominous build-up to next year's Beijing Games by spearheading Australia's Team Toshiba to victory in the men's team sprint final.
And Mactier claimed gold in the final of the women's individual pursuit.
Australia's time trial world record holder Anna Meares took silver in the women's sprint as she seeks to make the event her own for the Olympics after her pet 500m was dropped from the Games.
Phillip Thuaux chipped in with silver in the men's individual pursuit while West Australian teenager Cameron Meyer won bronze in the 30km points race.
Australia's professional track team of Bayley and team-mates Daniel Ellis and Shane Kelly clocked 44.639sec in the three-lap event to down German team Rad-Net (44.813), while a French Cofidis team including world champion team member Arnaud Tournant took bronze.
"We were expecting to go top five, we were trying a few things in the team because myself, Dan and Kells have only run that team once before," said a surprised Bayley.
"We weren't quite expecting to qualify first ... it's given us a lot of confidence in this team and it just shows us we've got so much more to come.
"We're proving that we're back up there somewhere."
Mactier, who is also the Commonwealth individual pursuit champion, clocked 3:38.379 to down Lithuanian Vilija Sereikaite by almost two seconds in the 3000m event.
Karin Thurig of Switzerland took the bronze.
"Priority number one's Olympic selection and that's kind of part and parcel of winning the race," she said.
"We're all in kind of November mood.
"It's such a massive turn-out for the first World Cup, there's a lot of nerves and tension.
"It doesn't surprise me that people are on or off."
Meares, who said she wasn't expecting a huge showing in Sydney, was pipped by Dutchwoman Willy Kanis while Belarusian Natallia Tsylinskaya took bronze.
Thuaux, riding for Australia's Drapac Porsche Development Team, went down in the individual pursuit gold medal race to Ukrainian Volodymyr Dyudya with Russia's Alexander Serov taking bronze.
Meyer notched up 24 points to finish behind New Zealander Greg Henderson (31) and Spain's Toni Tauler Llull (27).
The 19-year-old is a former junior world champion in three events and finished fourth at the senior worlds this year.
"I'm trying to get into the Beijing Olympics next year for that event, the points score, and so I started it with a win two weeks ago at the Oceania championships and now I've got a third so I've started well," he said.
Belinda Goss finished fifth in the women's 10km scratch race final after powering to the lead on the final lap, behind Cuban world champion Yumari Gonzalez Valdivieso, Italy's Annalisa Cucinott and Russian Anastasiay Chulkova.
