Kosmina set to sign new Sydney FC deal
Sydney FC are set to receive a boost ahead of their sudden-death A-League semi-final, with coach John Kosmina expected to announce he has signed a new two-year deal with the club.
The former Adelaide United boss joined Sydney mid-season on a short-term deal following the sacking of Branko Culina.
But after lifting the club from sixth place and into the finals, the former Socceroo star is expected to be rewarded with a long-term contract.
Sydney have lost just once in 13 games under Kosmina, with FC still well in the hunt for their second A-League title.
They play Queensland on Friday in the second leg of the minor semi-final with the elimination tie all square after a 0-0 draw in the opening match in Sydney last month.
Kosmina and the club are expected to make the announcement at their training headquarters at Macquarie University on Monday.
The 51-year-old was the fourth coach appointed by Sydney in less than three seasons last October.
None of his predecessors - German World Cup winner Pierre Littbarski, former England international Terry Butcher and Culina - lasted more than a year in the post.
But Kosmina appears set to buck that trend with Sydney chairman Andrew Kemeny keen to bring more stability to the club after a tumultuous early few years.
Kosmina spent some of his best years as a player in the old National Soccer League while at Sydney City when Kemeny was a club official.
The new deal will also complete a remarkable return to the elite coaching ranks for Kosmina after his controversial exit from Adelaide less than 12 months ago following their inglorious 6-0 grand final defeat against Melbourne.
