Grace leads Cats to vital win
Perth Wildcats' talisman Ricky Grace shrugged off injury and inauspicious form to guide his team to a morale-boosting 118-113 National Basketball League win over West Sydney at Challenge Stadium on Wednesday night.
The West Australian's usual suspects - Grace (20 points), James Harvey (19) and Matt Burston (21) - were the main men as they ended the Sydneysiders' record breaking winning run on the road.
And a triple-double (20 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists) from new recruit Rashad Tucker, in just his third NBL start, showed a hint of what the future might hold for the Wildcats.
Just two days after dislocating the index finger of his left hand, Grace took his place in the line-up, alongside fellow doubt Harvey who came into the game under the cloud of a corked thigh.
With West Sydney having won their last four starts - all on the road - they came to Perth armed with high hopes and fourth spot on the NBL ladder.
Before the game, coach Mike Ellis said the injury might make Grace shoot better, after a slow start to the season by the 37-year-old playmaker.
But it was Harvey on fire early, helping his side blow out to an 11 point lead, slotting 5-of-8 shots in the first term for a 12 point tally.
He was ably assisted by Grace, showing no signs of discomfort from his injured finger, but Simon Dwight, Sam McKinnon and David Pennisi all chipped in for the visitors to reduce the deficit to three at the first break.
In the second term, Grace pulled the strings and Burston spread his wings, with the 210cm centre notching eight points in the term to have 14 at the half.
But needless fouls and turnovers from Ellis' side, with John Jackson the main culprit, kept the Razorbacks within touching distance at the half, 61-55 down.
