Lyon to coach Saints next AFL season
St Kilda coach Ross Lyon will definitely remain at the AFL club through to the end of next season.
Lyon is negotiating with the Saints about a contract extension.
It is understood the Saints and their coach have reaffirmed his commitment for next year, ending growing speculation that Melbourne is trying to lure Lyon with a massive offer.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Saints strongly denied media speculation that Lyon had spoken to the players as a group about his future.
The club are determined to extend his current deal.
Lyon has taken St Kilda to the past two grand finals, narrowly missing out on premierships.
He is renowned as one of the league's premier tacticians and has earned widespread respect for what he has achieved at the Saints.
He took over the Saints in 2007, his first senior coaching job.
"He's had great success - if you're in the market for a coach, you'd be interested to see what he's going to be doing down the track and whether or not he's available," acting Melbourne football director Garry Lyon told Triple M radio on Tuesday afternoon.
Speculation about the Saints coach's future has intensified following last Saturday night's season-ending loss to Sydney in their elimination final.
Ross Lyon spoke post-match about it feeling like the end of an era, although he was referring to the state of the team rather than his own immediate future.
A Saints spokesperson denied on Tuesday that anything out of the ordinary had happened during the day at the club's Seaford headquarters.
Several players arrived and left as the club conducted standard post-season review meetings.
"Ross was at work today, as you'd expect," the spokesperson said.
"We have had discussions about next year and what that's going to look like.
"We expect him to be coaching us next year."
Club chief executive Michael Nettlefold had also made it clear that the Saints were confident they would not lose Lyon for next season.
"Ross is with us, we want him for the foreseeable future, we've started those discussions (and) we'll continue those discussions," he said.
"Ross is certainly with us until the end of next year."
Melbourne are in the market for a senior coach following the sacking of Dean Bailey during the season.
