Warne sheds no tears over Lyon's departure
High-profile St Kilda AFL supporter Shane Warne is shedding no tears over coach Ross Lyon's defection to Fremantle.
Australia's leading wicket-taker in Test cricket has been attacking Lyon on Twitter this year, encouraging the Saints mentor to shed his defensive game plan.
Lyon had guided the Saints to grand final appearances in 2009 and 2010 and an elimination final loss last week, but Warne says he simply can't cop St Kilda's brand of football.
Lyon sensationally quit the Saints on Thursday night and is expected to formally accept the Fremantle role on Friday following Mark Harvey's sacking.
"The only person at this stage in my family who is disappointed (at Lyon's decision to leave St Kilda) would be my son because he barracks for Fremantle," Warne said on the Nine Network's The Footy Show on Thursday night.
"As a St Kilda supporter, I know a few of the players down there as well ... you look at the way they play their football," added Warne, who is a former reserve-grade player with the Saints.
"It should be a very attacking game of football we should play. We get a bit too defensive.
"What's wrong with attacking and actually winning by 18 goals versus 16 instead of seven plays five?
"I just don't like that brand of football.
"By being more attacking, they could maybe take the next step.
"It's maybe just lacking something, and maybe that's aggression that could take them over that final hurdle (to win a flag for the first time since 1966)."
Warne said under Lyon's game plan, "If your big guns don't fire, you're probably going to lose".
Warne, 42, retired from Test cricket in 2007 but is being pursued by Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades for this summer's domestic Twenty20 league.
"I'm definitely going to play a few games and have some fun," Warne said.
