Warrington close in on SL title
Wigan suffered a post-Wembley Challenge Cup hammering as Warrington took a giant stride towards lifting the rugby league leaders' shield on Sunday.
Australian brothers Michael and Joel Monaghan were the stars of the Warrington show as Wigan's club record run of 12 straight wins was brought to a shuddering halt 39-12.
The Monaghan brothers ran in half of Warrington's six tries, with Matt King, Lee Briers and Jon Clarke also crossingfor Wolves.
That leaves Warrington only needing to win at Hull next weekend to take the title after an inspirational performance by skipper Adrian Morley, who returned after two months out, to help derail Wigan's championship charge.
To make matters worse for Wigan, Gareth Hock and Sam Tomkins now face disciplinary action after a bad-tempered affair.
Harlequins will be counting down until the season's end after they conceded more than 50 points against rampant Huddersfield, who booked fourth spot in Super League in the process during the nine-try romp.
Danny Brough scored one of the Giants' tries in a 52-12 win and kicked eight goals for a 20-point haul, while Leroy Cudjoe, Joe Wardle and Jermaine McGillvary all ran in two tries.
Graeme Horne and Scott Grix were the other try scorers as the Giants booked a semi-final, probably against new title favourites Warrington.
Bradford scored eight times as Crusaders lost 48-24, with Bulls winger Patrick Ah Van clocking up 20 points.
On Saturday, Castleford's hopes of reaching the play-offs took a turn for the worse as they were badly beaten 50-18 at home by Hull FC.
Jordan Turner, Willie Manu and Tom Briscoe each ran in two tries for Hull, while Kirk Yeaman, Danny Houghton and Will Sharp all crossed too as the Black and Whites ensured a top eight finish.
Catalan Dragons failed to sign off the season with a home win as they lost 30-28 against Hull KR.
Kris Welham ran in two tries, with Sam Latus, Craig Hall and Michael Dobson, who kicked five goals, scoring Rovers' other three tries.
On Friday night, Leeds overcame Wakefield 64-20, flying out of the blocks and scoring five tries by half-time as Ryan Hall crossed twice with other scores coming from Ben Jones-Bishop, Carl Ablett and Danny McGuire.
Hall then completed his treble after the break with further scores coming from the former New Zealand Warrior Ali Lauitiiti, ex-Newcastle Knight Danny Buderus, Jamie Peacock and Lee Smith, while McGuire also added his second score of the night.
Kevin Sinfield kicked ten goals as the Rhinos racked up their highest score of this Super League season.
Wakefield's four tries came from former Gold Coast fullback Ryan Tongia, Josh Veivers, former Brisbane Bronco Motu Tony and Kyle Amor, while Gareth Moore kicked two goals.
St Helens came from behind to claim a 30-6 win against Salford that sealed third spot in the table.
In-form winger Danny Williams put the Reds in front at the Halton Stadium but the Saints came storming back with tries from former Sydney Roosters centre Iosia Soliola and Tommy Makinson before the break, Jonny Lomax adding a drop goal.
Ex-Auckland Warrior Francis Meli, Lee Gaskell and Matty Ashurst then crossed after the interval to seal the win, Jamie Foster landing five goals in all.
