Brownlow loss would leave Mitchell flat
Hawthorn midfielder Sam Mitchell says he'll be feeling pretty flat if he polls the most votes in the Brownlow Medal in September.
Mitchell is leading some media awards and is averaging 32 possessions per game for the Hawks.
However, he made head-high contact with Geelong's Steve Johnson in their round-five clash and is is ineligible for the Brownlow because the reprimand was originally deemed to be worth more than the one-match, 100-point threshold.
"I guess you'd be pretty proud that you'd polled the most votes in the competition," Mitchell told OneHD's The Game Plan on Thursday.
"People like to knock it but it is the biggest individual award so if you polled the most votes I'd be very very proud of that.
"But you'd be pretty flat if you did it and you didn't get to take it home.
"But hopefully you'd be preparing for a bigger game that week so you wouldn't worry about it."
Mitchell said it was unlikely he would join former Bulldogs forward Chris Grant and ex-Kangaroos ruckman Corey McKernan in losing a Brownlow because of a minor offence.
"It's a lot of talk about nothing. Juddy (Carlton's Chris Judd) will be a long way in front by this stage of the year," Mitchell said.
Mitchell has never won All-Australian selection but after giving up the captaincy in the off-season, the two-time club champion's form is certainly putting him in the frame for selection honours.
"I'm not sure (about career-best form)," Mitchell said.
"I guess I'm playing reasonably consistently."
Hawks skipper Luke Hodge has been among those pushing the midfielder's name forward for consideration for All-Australian selection.
Ever the team man, Mitchell said the Hawks were mourning the loss of Allan Jeans, who died this week aged 77.
Jeans coached St Kilda to their 1966 flag and guided the Hawks to premierships in 1983, 1986 and 1989.
"He's a significant person around our footy club. He and John Kennedy are the two genuineicons as far as coaches across the journey," Mitchell said.
"Particularly Al Clarkson has had a lot to do with him. Over the last six months he has taken a lot of players down there to meet him and he still had words of wisdom."
Mitchell said the Hawks chatted with Jeans a few weeks ago through a video-cam.
"He looked very very sick," Mitchell said.
"But what he was saying and the way he communicated right to the end was pretty impressive."
Third-placed Hawthorn have the bye this week.
