Brisbane Lions co-captain Jonathan Brown claimed the AFL club's Merrett-Murray Medal award for best player of the season for the second straight year.

The 26-year-old forward polled 53.5 votes to narrowly defeat onballer Simon Black on 51 votes and midfielder Luke Power on 46.5 votes.

Brown also took home the best forward award for the second year in a row.

The dual club champion played 21 of a possible 22 matches for the Lions in 2008, kicking 70 goals from predominantly centre half-forward and leading the club with 167 marks.

Brown has already received the 2008 AFL Players' Association Most Courageous Player award and was selected earlier this season as captain of Victoria in the AFL's Hall of Fame Tribute Match.

Black, this year's Brownlow Medal runner-up, finished just 2.5 votes shy of securing his fourth Merrett-Murray Medal while Luke Power finished in the club's top five for the sixth straight season.

Lions leading goal-kicker Daniel Bradshaw finished a career-best fourth in the best and fairest voting and utility Jared Brennan earned his first appearance in the club champion top five.

Voting for the Merrett-Murray Medal is conducted by the Lions' match committee who give each player a rating out of five at the conclusion of each game.

The Medal itself is named after two club legends - Kevin Murray and Roger Merrett - each of whom made a significant contribution to the club's history with Fitzroy and the Brisbane Bears respectively.
