Lions rally around their coach
Former Brisbane team-mate and fellow AFL mentor Craig Lambert has warned critics against writing off under-fire coach Michael Voss, as the injury-hit Lions struggle to find their first win in 2011.
The Lions' favourite son is feeling the heat from all quarters since Brisbane's sixth consecutive loss to the Gold Coast Suns last weekend.
Lambert, an assistant to Kevin Sheedy at the AFL's new franchise in western Sydney, says his former midfield partner will come good soon.
"One thing I can tell you about Michael Voss is that when he was under pressure as a player you had to look out," Lambert, a best and fairest at both Richmond (1991) and the Bears (1994) told AAP.
"Beware Michael Voss, when he is under pressure, there's none better."
Lambert, back in Brisbane with a young squad of GWS players, including former rugby league star Israel Folau for a trial game against the Lions reserves on Saturday, said losing the experienced duo Johnathan Brown and Brent Staker to injury was a huge blow to the Lions and to Voss's plans.
"I've known Michael since he was an 18-year-old, he's definitely the right man for the job," he said.
"He's always been at his best when he's under pressure and I'd definitely stick with him and let him finish what he started."
Lambert, who was on Brisbane's coaching staff before joining the Giants, keeps in close contact with a number of senior Lions players.
"I talk to them a lot and one thing I can tell you for certain is they are rock solid," he said.
Lambert said it was disappointing to see his old club languishing at the bottom of the ladder but he was confident Voss would turn around their fortunes once they found their first win.
The Lions will be looking for the breakthrough against Essendon at the Gabba on Saturday night.
