Lions review draws first blood
The Brisbane Lions' club review has claimed its first victim with strength and conditioning manager Lachlan Penfold farewelled on Monday.
Penfold worked in the Lions football department for six seasons, taking over from Craig Starcevich after their fourth straight grand final appearance in 2004.
The club is now looking for a replacement to work under coach Michael Voss and his right-hand man Dan Collins.
Penfold's position was under threat after the club was criticised for hitting the wall in April after a 4-0 start to the season before several key players were struck down by injury.
Captain Jonathan Brown and fellow power forward Brendan Fevola were troubled by groin problems, while Josh Drummond, Jared Brennan, Jed Adcock, Daniel Merrett and Matt Maguire were sidelined for lengthy periods.
Penfold, who was promoted to Brisbane's senior role of head of strength and conditioning in 2006, previously worked with Australia's gold medal winning women's water polo squad at the 2000 Olympics.
He also worked with the Australian softball squad who won two Olympic medals during his tenure.
"The Brisbane Lions AFC would like to sincerely thank Lachlan for his wonderful service throughout his time with the Club and wish him well with his future projects," the club said in a statement on Monday.
Penfold is the second Lions football department staffer to end his time at the Gabba after their 13th-placed finish in 2010, following welfare development manager Craig Lambert's decision to end his 17-year club association.
The Lions' review, which started last week, includes Voss and chief executive Michael Bowers on its panel along with independent experts John Reid and Terry Coyne.
