Lyon's loving finals week: Hutchison
If St Kilda coach Ross Lyon wears a bored look through Friday's grand final parade, Saints fans needn't worry - because he's enjoying it on the inside.
St Kilda football manager Greg Hutchison says the Saints have told their players to embrace the week of celebrations in Melbourne for Saturday's AFL showpiece.
And that goes for the coach too.
"I'm sure deep down he would. He'd be enjoying it," Hutchison said on Thursday.
"He'd be anxious and nervous about how he's going about it but I'm sure he'd enjoy it.
"I know last year he took his kids and I think he's going to take them again.
"Last year it was a bit hard to enjoy it because it was raining.
"So we just hope it's a nice sunny day, Melbourne turns it on tomorrow for a beautiful day and we can all sit back and enjoy it and soak it all up.
"Grand final day in Melbourne is fantastic and the parade tomorrow is a fantastic thing to be involved in."
Hutchison says the Saints have made adjustments to how they handle grand final week after the frenzy of last year, which ended with a heartbreaking 12-point loss to Geelong.
"Yes we've been able to do some things differently this week that we weren't able to do last (grand final) week," he said.
"Particularly in terms of our organisation of the week.
"We've done a lot of things earlier in the week that we were pushing out towards the latter part of the week last year.
"Hopefully we've learnt from it."
But the Saints haven't changed their policy on lock-out training sessions, even in what Lyon calls "round 26" - otherwise known as grand final week.
Collingwood trained in front of 10,000 adoring fans at Gosch's Paddock on Wednesday and will do so again on Friday.
But St Kilda's session on Thursday was a lock-out, with fans excluded and media escorted out of Moorabbin Oval after the warm-ups.
"We had an open training session on Monday morning which had five thousand people attend," Hutchison said.
"We just happened to have our open training session (for grand final week) on the Monday morning.
"Collingwood, it's very hard for them to have any closed sessions because they train at Gosch's Paddock.
"Whilst people may say it's different and they've gone about it differently, I would think that we've done what we needed to do.
"We have a closed session on Tuesday and Thursday usually and we haven't changed from that this week.
"We had an option to train there every week of the finals this year.
"Logistically it was just a little bit difficult to get all our masseurs and food requirements to the MCG.
"Whilst it was very nice of the MCC to offer, we chose to be here."
