I won't select defectors: Williams
Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams says he won't select any of his players who defect to the new Gold Coast AFL franchise.
Williams is dealing with scrutiny on the future of emerging duo Robbie Gray and Travis Boak, who are not contracted by Port past this season.
Both young Victorians have reportedly verbally committed to Port, dismissing overtures from the Gold Coast.
Williams on Friday delivered a blunt message to any of his players who signed to the coast while playing for Port.
"My initial thoughts were if I knew someone was going to Gold Coast, I wouldn't play him, what is the point?" he said on Friday.
Port's sweeping defender Nathan Krakouer has also been suggested as a Gold Coast target.
Cash-challenged Port don't pay their full salary cap.
"It's up to our club to provide an environment where they think they are going to improve," Williams said.
"And a platform where they can show their talents and be involved in major games and that is what we hope to be able to deliver in the very near future to those sort of guys."
Williams has also revisited his concept of an Anzac Day AFL match in New Zealand - as long as it involves his club.
"The significance of the New Zealand impact with Australians, if you want to make it a real genuine one rather than just talk about, lets go over there and celebrate it," he said.
"Obviously it works for us, we could wear all black and that would be a significant thing for the New Zealand crowd.
"And to become a yearly event, you would think they would look forward to it.
"Certainly to be able to be beamed into prime time in Australia because of the time difference, it certainly suits the networks and I'd imagine that they would be lining up for the idea and the thought of it.
"The only problem I have is hopefully it's Port Adelaide that gets the nod rather than some other team."
