Port close to inking new deal with Gray
Port Adelaide is close to inking a new contract with emerging AFL star Robbie Gray which they hope will also lead to teammate Travis Boak re-signing.
The Victorian-born players are out of contract at season's end, with both attracting interest from Port's AFL rivals.
Port officials on Friday said Gray was close to re-signing with the club, denying reports the 22-year-old had already done so.
Power coach Mark Williams hopes Gray's imminent deal could sway his close mate Boak into staying as well.
"Robbie is a real important player for us going forward and he has great connections with Boaky so if you get one, you will probably get the other," Williams said on Friday.
Gray and Boak, 21, were both recruited to Port in the 2006 national draft.
Gray's class has never been questioned, but the 40-gamer has had to overcome frequent soft-tissue injuries to take more prominent on-field roles.
"His body is improving each year so we are really confident that he can be a 10-, 12-year player for us," Williams said.
"Now we are really confident he is going to be a major player through the centre square and in the forward line."
Boak, a prime mover in Port's midfield, is considering a contract offer from Port at the same time as Gray.
"Trav will still make his own decisions, he's his own man, but they are very good friends," Williams said.
