Maguire set to quietly notch his AFL ton
While all eyes will be fixed on Brendan Fevola, another Brisbane recruit Matt Maguire will quietly celebrate his 100th AFL match in his Lions debut on Saturday night.
The injury-plagued former St Kilda defender notches the milestone against the West Coast at the Gabba after playing just four senior games in the past two years.
Given a career lifeline by Lions coach Michael Voss at the pre-season draft, Maguire has impressed in practice matches and will play in his customary centre half-back position.
The 25-year-old, jinxed since a broken leg ruined his 2006 when in All-Australian contention, has declined interview requests this week.
Maguire and ex-Carlton spearhead Fevola are two of six new faces playing their first games for Brisbane.
Former Sydney forward Amon Buchanan, West Coast signing Brent Staker and Richmond recruit Andrew Raines have also been named in the Lions outfit.
Nippy teenager Todd Banfield's pre-season form has also been rewarded with an AFL debut in attack alongside Fevola, making him one of six West Australians to oppose the Eagles.
Voss this week said there would be some unlucky players left out of his team due to the new arrivals and emergence of Banfield and fellow youngster Tom Rockliff.
Rockliff narrowly missed selection along with Cheynee Stiller and James Hawksley, who played in Brisbane's 2009 finals team.
Staker, named on the interchange bench, initially dreaded the prospect of playing his old club in the first round but has now embraced the challenge.
"As the pre-season has gone on it's the best thing to happen and likewise for Brendan Fevola (playing Carlton in round two)," he said.
"It's the best way, to get it out of the way early."
