Hodgson, Brown scoop Super League awards
Australians have taken out the two major prizes at the Super League awards with former Wests Tigers skipper Brett Hodgson and former St George Illawarra mentor Nathan Brown both honoured in their first seasons in the UK.
Hodgson became just the fourth Australian to win the Man of Steel award since it was instigated in 1977, following on from Jamie Lyon who also won the top prize in his debut Super League season of 2005.
Hodgson's Huddersfield coach Brown was another major winner, scooping the coach of the year award after transforming the Giants in his first season at the West Yorkshire club.
It was a dominant night all round for the Giants who were also named the Super League club of the year at the awards ceremony on Tuesday night.
Huddersfield, who finished third from bottom of the table in 2008, finished third this year and reached the Challenge Cup final.
Hodgson was a central figure behind their improved fortunes and the 31-year-old was also named the Rugby League Writers' Association player of the year last month and won the most votes in a poll of Super League players to lift the English game's most coveted individual award.
Hodgson, who was deemed to have made the biggest impact on the season, beat off competition from former Sydney Roosters star Adrian Morley of Warrington and St Helens prop James Graham, who won the award in 2008.
"Just to be nominated as one of the three players was such a big honour so there was no way I was going to miss such a big occasion," said Hodgson, who delayed his flight back to Australia so he could attend the ceremony.
"I'm over the moon, just so proud. This honour is absolutely huge.
"It's just something you don't dream about at the start of the year. I'll have to pinch myself in the next few days to realise what I've achieved."
Wigan Warriors halfback Sam Tomkins, 20, was named young player of the year.
