Tigers cubs continue to thrill in NRL
The playoff party continues for Wests Tigers after the young joint venture side blew away Brisbane 34-6 in their NRL semi-final at Aussie Stadium.
Far from fazed in their maiden finals campaign, the Tigers extended Brisbane's playoff woes by piling on six tries to one to book a preliminary final clash with title favourites St George Illawarra at Aussie Stadium next Saturday night.
To the delight of a 36,563-strong, pro-Tigers Aussie Stadium crowd, Brisbane lost its sixth straight finals clash - a run that extended back to 2002.
In contrast, the Tigers backed up from last weekend's record 50-6 qualifying final win over North Queensland to clinch their 10th victory in 12 games to confirm themselves as dark horses for the title in only their sixth season.
After leading 10-0 at the main break, the Tigers hit the second half running when fullback Brett Hodgson cut through Barry Berrigan and Shane Webcke, offloaded to Chris Heighington and the reserve found halfback Scott Prince, who stood up Brent Tate to score in the 44th minute.
However, Brisbane hit back three minutes later when skipper Darren Lockyer latched onto a Darren Smith inside ball and scored near the posts to give the Broncos a sniff.
But the Tigers shut the door with tries to veteran back-rower Mark O'Neill (63rd minute), two-try winger Daniel Fitzhenry (68th) and Hodgson (77th), breaking Brisbane's heart.
The Tigers took a surprise 10-0 lead to the main break despite Brisbane's dominance after a brilliant intercept try to pivot Benji Marshall and Fitzhenry scored on the stroke of halftime.
The Tigers threw caution to the wind in the dying seconds of the half and attacked the left flank with centre Paul Whatuira chipping cleverly for winger Fitzhenry to finally ground the ball under the posts.
The chip kick looked to be gobbled up by fullback Brett Hodgson but he was taken out by Brisbane reserve Casey McGuire, only for Fitzhenry to pounce.
