Gollings in line to score Reds contract
English Sevens maestro Ben Gollings could be in line to clinch one of the Queensland Reds coveted new overseas spots for the next Super 14 season.
The record-breaking fly-half was the first to accumulate 1,500 career points in IRB Sevens and remains the competition's leading point-scorer.
He was a late inclusion in the Reds squad for their development tour of Ireland and France which coach Phil Mooney said will double as his audition.
"We actually had a couple of late withdrawals and Benny is an old, experienced footballer so we've basically bought him along to give us a bit of experience and I guess effectively trial him for one of those overseas positions," Mooney said.
Gollings is currently with Sunnybank, but just spent a season with Japanese team Toyota Shokki and prior to that had been with UK clubs Harlequins, the Newcastle Falcons and Worcester.
Mooney named him in as starting stand-off in the Reds first game of their development tour against Magners League club Ulster, although rested his for their second against Connacht on Tuesday, Queensland losing both 24-0 and 24-12 respectively.
No immediate decisions are going to made though as the club uses this Irish trip as the ultimate litmus test for the future.
Amongst the Reds is another name to cross the road from rugby league to union in former Brisbane Bronco Rod Davies.
The 19-year-old played at fullback against Connacht and looked cool and confident under the high ball.
Former Canberra Raider Mark McLinden's recent addition to the squad could eventually see a four-way battle for the number 15 jersey with Brando Va'aulu, 21, gunning for the job and receiving endorsement from England-bound Chris Latham, but in-form Wallabies winger Peter Hynes seen as the front-runner for the position.
Reds officials also recently confirmed approaching Broncos and Australian rugby league representative Karmichael Hunt's management.
The Reds tour concludes with a match against Magners League champions Leinster in Dublin on Saturday before they fly to France and play Nice next Wednesday then head home.
