Will Chambers back on deck for Qld Reds
Queensland centre and World Cup prospect Will Chambers will end a frustrating five months on the sidelines when he returns from shoulder surgery this weekend.
Former Melbourne Storm three-quarter Chambers would have undoubtedly made his Wallabies debut this winter if not for succumbing to a lingering shoulder problem.
Despite carrying the injured joint for the past 18 months, Chambers still enjoyed a successful debut Super 14 season with the Reds and also starred for the Australian Barbarians in a 25-all draw with England in Perth in June.
His tackle-busting 100kg frame and ability to off-load would have been a welcome addition to a small Australian backline that lacked penetration in the Tri-Nations but Chambers knew he needed to bite the bullet.
"It was a tough decision at first but looking back it had to be done," he told AAP.
"I had the injury for 18 months and I'd been putting it off, putting it off.
"If I'd tried to make the spring tour then that might have ruled me out (for Super Rugby) and I wouldn't have the chance to push for the World Cup.
"That was always going to be the important thing, the World Cup, and if I have a good year with the Reds these things will look after themselves."
Chambers will join Reds No.8 Leroy Houston and sevens silver medallist at the Delhi Games Kimami Sitauti in a 12-man Queensland squad to play at the inaugural Noosa Sevens this weekend and is chomping at the bit for action.
"It's been a long five months out," he said. "It takes its toll on you in missing so much footy."
