Roosters beat Tigers in rainy match
Sydney Roosters returned to the top of the NRL with a hard-fought 19-10 win over Wests Tigers at the Sydney Football Stadium.
A standout performance from centre Mitch Aubusson, who scored two tries including a candidate for try of the season, set up the win before the Roosters held off a late Tigers fightback to join Melbourne on 18 competition points.
Aubusson also had a hand in the lead up to Amos Roberts' opening try for the Roosters, while second half tries to Robbie Farah and winger Taniela Tuiaki kept the Tigers in a match that ended in almost monsoonal conditions.
Farah kicked two 40-20s in the second half in an impressive performance on a losing side.
Both sides struggled to come to terms with the slippery conditions early on, the Tigers in particular guilty of dropping the ball too often.
The deadlock was broken in the 26th minute after Anthony Tupou made a bust and combined with Aubusson to get the Roosters within 20m of the tryline.
On the next play, Pearce spun a lovely cut-out ball to Sia Soliola, who put Roberts over for a simple finish.
Tupou and Aubusson combined again in the 31st minute when the latter strode under the posts after receiving a clever offload.
The Roosters could have gone further in front in the 35th minute when Pearce crossed, but the video referee ruled Setaimata Sa had knocked on in the lead-up.
Farah got the Tigers back in the game early in the second half when he charged 20 metres from dummy half to score after a cheeky 40-20 from a 20m restart took them upfield.
But Aubusson was at it again in the 53rd when he ran 80 metres to score after Pearce had charged down a Benji Marshall kick.
Showing both speed and strength, Aubusson fended off the attempted tackles from three Tigers defenders as he scorched down the sideline all the way to the tryline.
The Tigers thought they hit back when Beau Ryan latched on to a Farah grubber but the video referee ruled the winger failed to get downward pressure on the ball.
Tigers prop Bryce Gibbs prevented the Roosters from hitting back with a fine chase and tackle on Soliola and Tuiaki scored in the corner with 10 to go to get the visitors within eight.
Farah kicked another 40-20 as the heavens opened up, but the Tigers couldn't capitalise and Pearce nailed a field goal in the last minute to seal the win.
It was the Roosters fourth win in a row and continued a remarkable turnaround for a side anchored to the bottom of the ladder this time last year.
"We talked during the week about winning two or three (in a row), a lot of teams win two or three but you get that special bond when you can win four in a row and we're starting to feel pretty good here," five-eighth Braith Anasta said.
Fittler said he was "rapt" with the win given the conditions and paid tribute to Aubusson's contribution.
"His game was just international quality tonight, he never missed a tackle, never missed a beat he just protects the side all the time and then he scored two tries and one was a cracker." Tigers coach Tim Sheens praised his side's courage but admitted they just made too many mistakes.
He also question the consistency of the benefit of the doubt rule after video referee Chris Ward viewed Ryan's effort at least four times before disallowing it.
"He had enough looks at it, so he wasn't sure, so you know I would have thought it was a benefit of the doubt," Sheens said.
