Schalken beats Arthurs in Munich
Dutchman Sjeng Schalken overcame big-hitting Australian Wayne Arthurs 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 in the second round of the 400,000 euro ($A713,000) BMW Open in Munich.
Third seed Schalken, winner of seven career titles, improved his record against Arthurs to 3-1 after winning his third successive match in the series.
Schalken played the Munich quarter-finals eight years ago while Arthurs, who had notched 204 aces so far this season, lost in his only other appearance, the 2001 quarters against Czech Jiri Novak.
Czech Radek Stepanek defeated second seed Paradorn Srichaphan, scoring a 6-3 6-2 upset over the Thai ace.
Paradorn, who broke into the Top 10 in the Entry Rankings on April 21 and recently made the cover of the "Asian Heroes" special issue of Time Asia Magazine, admitted: "I started out well, but I was trying too much.
"He was also playing well. I lost my way and could never get my rhythm back. But I'll go to Rome ready to try and improve my game."
Paradorn said that he made most of the errors in the 69-minute disappointment but his typical upbeat style remained undented.
"My game may not have felt as good as it did in the first round, but I'm working on things. I go to Rome ready to do well at a Masters."
Russian veteran Yevgeny Kafelnikov doubled his success on the clay of Munich, earning a 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over German Alexander Waske for only his second career win at this event.
Prior to reaching the first round on Monday, the 29-year-old from Sochi had lost three matches at the Iphitos club. Now, by reaching the quarter-finals, he's notched two victories at the venue this week.
