Arthurs tips Aussies to win Davis Cup
A jubilant Wayne Arthurs predicted Australia could win its first Davis Cup since 1999 after defeating Sweden 5-0 in the quarter-final.
Wayne Arthurs and Mark Philippoussis completed Australia's clean sweep, Arthurs defeating Swedish debutante Joachim Johansson 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-4) and Philippoussis beating Magnus Norman 7-5 5-7 6-3.
Australia has the chance to play its final two ties at home after Switzerland won its quarter-final against France, setting up a semi-final in Sydney, Perth or Melbourne.
Should Australia overcome the Swiss, led by world No.5 Roger Federer, it will have a home final against Spain or Argentina.
"If we can keep the same team together, I don't see why we can't win this year," Arthurs said.
"It's a massive opportunity to have two home matches in a row. To have the semi and final both at home would be pretty big for us."
Arthurs was wary of the challenge that Federer would pose, rating him as one the top three Davis Cup players.
But he said the Australian team of world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt, Philippoussis, Todd Woodbridge and himself was good enough to lift the cup.
"Roger's proved over the last few years that he's a bloody good Davis Cup player. He's held that team together. If they don't have him they don't really have anybody," Arthurs said.
"But it's going really well for us. Mark seems to be loving it. He's very excited to be with us and obviously Lleyton just about lives for this sort of stuff.
