Arthurs, Dominikovic lose in Japan
Australians Wayne Arthurs and Evie Dominikovic were bundled out in first round tennis matches at the Japan Open.
American Robert Kendrick took care of Arthurs 7-6 (7-3) 6-4, while third seed Katarina Srebotnik, of Slovenia, sent Dominikovic packing 6-3 6-3.
Fifth seed Mark Philippoussis and Scott Draper, the only other Aussies in the hardcourt tournament, play Wednesday.
Big-serving Croatian Ivo Karlovic, who stunned defending champion Lleyton Hewitt in the first round of Wimbledon, dispatched Sweden's Robin Soderling 6-4 6-4.
The 2.08-metre Karlovic will next play second seed Sebastien Grosjean of France in an intriguing second-round match.
Australian Open runner-up Rainer Schuettler was the model of German efficiency as he trounced local wild card Satoshi Iwabuchi 6-0 6-4 in the second round.
Fellow German Nicolas Kiefer also reached the last 16 with a hard-fought 7-5 7-6 (9-7) victory over American Alex Bogomolov.
In other second-round matches, South Korean Lee Hyung-Taik, seeded seventh, beat Fernando Verdasco of Spain 6-3 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 while Swiss qualifier Michel Kratochvil upset 12th-seeded Dutchman John van Lottum 6-2 6-3.
Meanwhile, Ashley Harkleroad made a superb start in the women's tournament as the 18-year-old American demolished Japanese wildcard Maika Ozaki 6-0 6-0 in blustery conditions.
Russian 16-year-old Maria Sharapova was equally impressive, the fifth seed pummelling South Korean Kim Jin-hee 6-2 6-0 behind a flurry of baseline winners.
