Matildas trounce PNG
Matildas striker April Mann swept to the top of the scoring list when Australia defeated Papua New Guinea 13-0 in the Oceania women's World Cup qualifiers in Canberra on Wednesday night.
The result continued Australia's superiority over Papua New Guinea which has yet to score a goal against the Matildas in six meetings.
In the early match, New Zealand beat Cook Islands 9-0.
Mann scored twice in each half to take her tally to 13 goals in 16 appearances with eight in the current tournament.
Papua New Guinea had shown reasonable form in its win over the Cook Islands but the expected tougher match for Australia failed to eventuate.
"The win successfully completed three of the four parts of our program with only New Zealand left," Matildas coach Adrian Santrac said.
"We lacked composure in the first half but settled down in the second session.
"I was pleased with the build-ups, combination and mobility of the team and we were much more clinical tonight in front of goal."
The New Guineans pushed Australia early until the more experienced home team took control.
Captain Cheryl Salisbury with 83 caps, Kelly Golebiowski, with 53, and Sacha Wainwright, with 48, had too much skill and control as they calved huge gaps in the backline.
