Big names out of adidas tournament
The adidas International will continue here today devoid of three of its biggest names after the early elimination of men's defending champion Roger Federer, women's top seed Jennifer Capriati and Anna Kournikova.
Men's top seed Marat Safin assumes top billing when he takes on Fin Jarkko Nieminen in the second round.
Safin will be looking to set up a quarter-final showdown with flashy American Andy Roddick, the sixth seed who advanced last night with an easy 6-2 6-2 victory over Spaniard Tommy Robredo.
Second seed Juan Carlos Ferrero is also in action, taking on Russian Davis Cup hero Mikhail Youzhny.
Third seed Carlos Moya will take on American qualifier Mardy Fish tonight, after last year's runner-up Juan Ignacio does battle with South African veteran Wayne Ferreira.
Today's first match on centre court features women's second seed Kim Clijsters against Swiss Patty Schnyder.
Former world No.1 Lindsay Davenport plays doubles partner and fellow American Lisa Raymond in tonight's last match.
Yesterday, Capriati was forced to book an early flight to Melbourne after slumping to a 6-4 4-6 7-5 loss to unseeded Russian Tatiana Panova, Federer slipped up 6-2 6-3 to lucky loser Franco Squillari and Slovakian qualifier Janette Husarova bumped off Kournikova 6-4 2-6 6-1.
