Renaud seals 1-1 draw
Parramatta Power defender Brendan Renaud arrived in time to snatch a valuable point in a 1-1 NSL draw against Adelaide City at Parramatta Stadium.
The home team was trailing after an Aurelio Vidmar penalty in the 57th minute despite making most of the running in the first half.
Live-wire striker John Buonavoglia had weaved his way through the Adelaide defence in the 63rd minute and Renaud was on target to pick up the rebound after keeper David Scarsella had blocked the first shot.
"We had to play catch-up and to the credit of the players, they came back but I expected to pick up a goal in the last 15 minutes," Parramatta coach Nick Theodorakopoulos said.
"Adelaide is another top six chance and it was better to earn a point than allow them to move away."
Parramatta had the better chances in the opening session but the woodwork prevented it from holding a halftime lead.
The combination of Buonavoglia and Kostas Salapasidis always looked dangerous in attack and worried the Adelaide defence.
Goran Lozanovski posed the only real threat in the Adelaide front and his 25m drive midway through the half forced Parramatta keeper Liam Reddy into a diving save.
Power midfielder Brad Maloney almost opened the scoring in the 34th minute with a 35m angled free kick which curled onto the far post and was scrambled away for a corner.
Maloney was proving dangerous with his free kicks and Buonavoglia added extra pressure with his accurate crosses from both wings.
The opening goal came against the run of play when Adelaide's Carl Veart passed to Vidmar in the penalty area when he was bundled by defender Nick Orlic.
Former Socceroo Vidmar had little difficulty in sending Reddy the wrong way in converting the spot kick.
Buonavoglia had a chance to wrap up the match four minutes from time as Parramatta continually pushed forward, but his left foot shot from close range was blocked off the goal line.
Scarsella kept the visitors in the match in the last 15 minutes with a series of saves in either punching or catching the ball to foil the Parramatta onslaught.
"I expected Scarella to do his job and we have to accept one point," Adelaide coach Zoran Matic said.
"I just had to come back for more punishment," said the coach, who had been brought back by Adelaide after a series of poor team performances earlier in the season.
