Old Lion Lynch too much for Tigers
Brisbane veteran Alastair Lynch kicked six goals to help the Lions to a 43-point win over Richmond who continued their downward trajectory on the AFL ladder with their fifth consecutive loss.
As well as kicking half a dozen goals, Lynch, the oldest player in the AFL, also used his strength in the goalsquare to shepherd a few more majors as Brisbane returned to the winners list with a 15.14 (104) to 9.7 (61) victory.
Richmond had arrived in Queensland on Wednesday to give themselves every chance of upsetting the dual premiers and in the first quarter it looked as if it worked with the Lions only kicking their first goal in the time-on period.
Brad Ottens was the dominant big man while Joel Bowden, Greg Tivendale and Leon Campbell managed to win most of the stoppages.
But after the first goal the Lions midfield of Simon Black, Jason Akermanis and Luke Power stepped up a gear while youngster Jamie Charman became the dominant big man of the game.
At the other end of the ground Mal Michael kept Matthew Richardson quiet while Chris Johnson provided plenty of rebound until he went off with a hamstring injury in the third quarter.
Brisbane held a 17-point lead at halftime and Richmond managed to keep in touch in the second half against the run of play with accurate kicking and some favourable 50 metre penalties.
Both teams made late changes to their sides with Richmond skipper Wayne Campbell withdrawing after he was unable to recover from a troublesome calf injury.
He was replaced in the side by Chris Hyde.
For the Lions tall utility Darryl White withdrew because of illness and he was replaced by debutant Jason Gram.
