Crocs continue NBL misery for Razorbacks
The Townsville Crocodiles have kept their NBL finals hopes alive with a hard-fought 122-100 win over the West Sydney Razorbacks at the Swamp.
Crocs centre Casey Calvary was almost unstoppable, missing just two shots from the field in racking up a game-high 27 points while Brad Newley continued his recent run of good form with 25 points.
Improving guard Clint Reed top scored for the visitors with 20 points while import James Taylor added 19.
The loss extended West Sydney's club record losing streak to ten but the vastly understrength Pigs were competitive for most of the match, getting to within three points during a third quarter charge, before a final quarter blowout.
Rillie showed no ill effects of a broken toe suffered at training earlier this week, registering thirteen points in the opening term as the Crocs went to the first break leading 33-27.
It was a big turnaround from last week when Rillie hit just one shot for the entire game against Wollongong, although coach Ian Stacker said there was no pressure to get the sharpshooter more involved.
"There wasn't a plan by us to go out and get him more looks, tonight I think he just got open for us," Stacker said.
"I think John probably didn't know how long he'd be out there tonight.
"You could see him favouring it more and more as the match went on."
The Crocs sit two games behind eighth placed Hunter and Stacker said there was still plenty of room for improvement.
"I think its a confidence issue now," Stacker said.
"I think there's a tremendous amount of scope for improvement in our confidence. That can only come from doing the work on a day to day (basis) and getting a couple of wins."
Razorbacks coach Mark Watkins admitted depth was a problem as the Crocs ran away with the match down the stretch.
"They're a good team as far as scoring goes and the floodgates opened a bit," Watkins said.
"The guys keep plugging away and they're playing hard.
"I'm really happy with some aspects and others I'm not. We're not far off, we're just players short."
West Sydney is still a mathematical chance of making the post-season but Watkins was realistic about his team's chances.
"We know we're not gonna make it and that's being honest," Watkins said.
"The goal is we're going to create some havoc for teams above us."
The win helped Crocs veteran Robert Rose celebrate his 450th NBL game in style.
