McIntosh wins Qld open golf title
Brad McIntosh finally got his hands on the Queensland Open trophy, after a year of thinking what might have been following the 2004 washout at Ipswich Golf Club.
Joint runner-up to Steven Bowditch in a 2004 Open reduced to 54 holes after a final-round deluge, McIntosh was determined to go one better this year on a layout perfectly suited to his big-hitting game.
The Wollongong 23-year-old did just that and shot a final-round 69 to finish at 20-under 268 to win the $105,000 Open by three shots from a fast-finishing Peter Senior.
Crowd favourite Senior sunk seven birdies on Sunday in his superb 65, a round good enough to relegate joint overnight leader David Diaz, who shot a final-round 73, to third place.
"I needed 62 or better - we all knew it was going to be around 20 under that would win it," Senior said.
McIntosh's second Von Nida Tour event victory was made even sweeter because it earned him a place in this month's Australian Open at Moonah Links.
"I don't have to qualify for it anymore - it's great," the powerful left-hander said.
"To perform here in Ipswich two years in row, second last year and a win this year, it's just fantastic.
"I left the course last year wondering what could have happened if it hadn't of rained, so it's good to come back and win."
Leading amateur was rising star Jason Day, who shot 69 on Sunday to finish at 12-under, eight shots adrift of McIntosh.
