Green sidelined with back injury
Danny Green was ordered to do nothing for a month and wasn't sure whether he would fight again this year, after being diagnosed with two fractured vertebrae in his back.
His October 23 fight in Perth with America's No.1 ranked WBC super middleweight contender Scott Pemberton was postponed indefinitely.
The injury occurred whilst second-ranked WBC contender Green was sparring with Julio Gonzalez in Los Angeles just over three weeks ago.
While unsure how the enforced lay-off would affect his prospects of a third fight against WBC champion Markus Beyer, Green thought his much touted domestic match-up with Anthony Mundine would now happen sooner.
He said discussions with the Mundine camp were at a more advanced stage than they had been at any other point over the last four years.
Green said it would now depend on what the WBC, which has also sanctioned another eliminator between top ten ranked fighters Christian Sanavia and Otis Grant, wanted to do.
The injury was caused by a punch thrown by Gonzalez, who will challenge Englishman Clinton Woods for the IBF light heavyweight title next week.
Green actually sparred with Gonzalez again two days later and said the initial diagnosis of the injury was that it was not too severe.
"He's come downstairs and I pivoted a little bit too much and he came around the back and he smashed me that hard on the spine that I have broken two vertebrae and I just felt my whole bottom go completely numb straight away," Green said.
Excruciating pain over the following weeks prompted him to get an MRI scan and the result on Wednesday revealed the full extent of the problem.
