Kings thump under strength Breakers
Recruit Jason Smith added some pre-season scoring sizzle to the Sydney Kings as the defending National Basketball League champions scored a convincing 124-99 win over a vastly under strength New Zealand Breakers at Alexandria.
The Breakers, who were without eight New Zealand representatives, were down 37-18 in the first quarter, but fought back to trail by just three in the second quarter.
Coming off two trial matches against West Sydney and Hunter last weekend, the Breakers ran out of legs after their third game in four days.
Shooting guard Smith, who has had only three training sessions with Sydney because of his national team commitments, nailed three three-pointers in the first five minutes on his way to scoring 23 points.
"After half-time I had nothing left in the legs, we've been working pretty hard with the Boomers. It's the first time we (Sydney) have been together and I think we showed some promising signs, but we've got a long way to go," Smith said.
Fellow Boomer Mat Nielsen, who will start the season at centre in place of the injured Brett Wheeler, notched a team high 24 points and ten from 17 field goal shooting.
Wheeler and injured point guard Cj Bruton were the only prominent Kings missing from the team.
American forward Ebi Ere scored 14 points on six of 11 field goal attempts before fouling out in his first appearance in a Kings uniform.
Forward David Stiff contributed 14 points and ten rebounds with lively guard and recent recruit Luke Martin supplying 12 points.
Guard Prem Krishna sparked the Breakers off the bench with a game high 26 points, which included seven three-point baskets.
