Perren to open up for Bulls
Former Pura Cup player of the year Clinton Perren will continue his transformation from middle-order batsman to opener in Queensland's Pura Cup match against NSW this week.
Perren has been selected to open the Bulls' innings with skipper Jimmy Maher in the season-opening four-day match starting on Friday at the Gabba.
Voted the Pura Cup's best player in 2002-03 when he topped the batting averages with 693 runs at 57.75, the 29-year-old only cut his teeth at the top of the order that season.
He backed up with 721 at 37.94 last season when he again mostly partnered Maher in the absence of Test star Matthew Hayden.
In backing Perren as opener ahead of his close friend Brendan Nash, the Queensland selectors made just one change to the team that scored a tense two-wicket ING Cup win over the Blues at the Gabba on Sunday.
Fast bowler Joe Dawes was included as one of four quicks in the Bulls' 12-man side, taking the place of batsman Craig Philipson.
NSW can also call on a four-prong pace attack in the match with fast bowling all-rounder Grant Lambert selected in the side alongside Nathan Bracken, Stuart Clark and Matthew Nicholson.
Lambert and off-spinner Jason Krejza have taken the places of Don Nash and Shawn Bradstreet in the Blues' 12.
The promising Krejza, 21, took five wickets in a trial match against Victoria last Thursday.
QUEENSLAND: Jimmy Maher (capt), Clinton Perren, Martin Love, Andrew Symonds, Aaron Nye, James Hopes, Chris Simpson, Wade Seccombe, Andy Bichel, Ashley Noffke, Shane Jurgensen, Joe Dawes (12th man to be named).
