Rain washes out Qld, NSW cricket match

Both sides were desperate for a win but rain was the eventual victor in the washed-out one-day game between Queensland and NSW at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Only 27.5 overs of play were possible with defending champions Queensland making 4-127.

Ryan Broad (55 not out) and Aaron Nye (43) shared an 83-run partnership to help the Bulls recover from a slow start.

But their efforts proved fruitless with four rain interruptions causing frustration for the players and a handful of fans with the umpires finally abandoned the game at 8.20pm.

Queensland lost three wickets for 44 inside the first 14 overs with captain Jimmy Maher (13), Clinton Perren (4) and Craig Philipson (3) all falling to the Blues' pace attack after Maher won the toss in overcast conditions.

Opener Broad was joined by Nye who reached 43, his highest score in one-dayers for Queensland, before he was caught at deep square leg for 43 at 4-127 in the frenzy of the final overs.

Nye's wicket fell on the fifth ball of the 28th over, giving Mark Cameron (2-26) his second scalp.

Left-armer Doug Bollinger took 1-6 from five overs in a miserly effort although he dropped an easy catch at mid-off.

The Bulls had been preparing for a final blitz of hitting in their 32-over innings, but rain immediately followed Nye's departure and forced players from the field at 5.52pm for the fourth rain interruption of the innings.

The innings was declared closed at 7.28pm.

Broad, 25, had reached his maiden half-century off 75 balls and hit four fours and one six in his 82-ball knock.

Broad was dropped at mid-off on 23 while Nye was also fortunate.

He was missed at third man and dropped at mid-off in the same over from Matthew Nicholson and was then lucky to survive a fumbled stumping attempt by Daniel Smith off spinner Nathan Hauritz's bowling.

NSW and Queensland both lost their opening games in the one-day competition and took two points each from the washout.

The Blues host Queensland in a Pura Cup match at the SCG on Friday.

Broad, who has a highest score of 111 in eight Pura Cup games, said he would take extra confidence into Friday's clash after tonight's knock.

"You always like to be scoring runs before going into any match so for me personally yeah I think I'll take a little bit of confidence into the next game," the right-handed opener said.

Queensland's international players have returned from Australia's tour of India and are set to play in Friday's Pura Cup clash.

Broad said all-rounder Andrew Symonds was in good spirits despite being the target of racial abuse from Indian crowds.

"Roy (Andrew Symonds) has been floating in and out of the rooms. Mitch (Johnson) just came in today. It's good to have them around," Broad said.

"It's great to have Roy around. He's a bit of a character in the dressing room. Fantastic."
