Matthew Hayden used both brute force and strategy to trump several of his Test teammates and help Queensland end NSW's unbeaten start to the domestic cricket season.

He also stole some of the thunder of rising star and NSW opening batsman Phil Jaques, who blasted a magnificent 152 off 141 balls to register the fifth highest individual score in the domestic one day competition.

The 26-year-old's score was also the second biggest by an NSW player in one dayers, behind Rick McCosker's 164 against South Australia in 1981-82.

If the apprentice staked a solid claim for international recognition after registering his maiden domestic one day hundred last week, it was the master of left-handers, Hayden, who orchestrated the Blues' first defeat in six completed games this season.

Chasing the testing NSW score of 6-275, Queensland got home with three wickets and 16 balls to spare.

Hayden set the tone by lofting Test teammate Glenn McGrath over long-on for six.

The Australian opener belted 83 off 69 balls with nine fours and three sixes, and was involved in a pivotal partnership of 113 off 100 deliveries with Clinton Perren (96 off 103).

It was a hugely productive day for the left-handers, with three of them, Jaques, NSW captain Simon Katich (51 off 46) and Aaron O'Brien (36 off 49) supplying the bulk of the Blues' runs.

Katich, who declined to comment on his Test axing after scoring just three runs in his last four international innings, put his improved form down to "a bit of luck".

"It was nice to get a few runs, finally," Katich said.
